A Heat pump uses electrical energy to condition a space in summer and also in the winter by reversing the refrigeration cycle. Refrigerant absorbs heat from the conditioned space in summer and rejects it outside and absorbs heat from outside in winter and rejects it in the conditioned space.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) determined that all new central air conditioners and heat pumps sold in the US must have a minimum of 13 SEER beginning January 2006, a 30-percent increase in efficiency relative to previous law.
A few terms defined:
Seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER)
The SEER is the total cooling output provided by the unit during its normal annual usage compared to the total energy input in watt during the same period.
Coefficient of Performance (COP)
A ratio calculated by dividing the total heating capacity provided by the heat pump, including circulating fan heat but excluding supplementary resistance heat (Btus per hour), by the total electrical input (watts) x 3.412.
Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)
A ratio calculated by dividing the cooling capacity in Btus per hour (Btu/h) by the power input in watts at a given set of rating conditions, expressed in Btu/h per watt.
Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF)
HSPF is typically used with heat pumps. The higher the HSPF rating, the more efficient a heat pump is at heating your building.
TON:
Ton is a term used for capacity on air condition, 12000 BTU (British Thermal Unit) is equal to a ton of refrigeration, it takes certain tonnage of refrigeration to cool down a house and it varies from house to house depends on verity of factors.
